Finding the light at home

You don't need a studio for lovely family photos. Here is how to find the best light in your own home.

Soft window light falling across a wooden floor in a quiet room with a single chair.

Before a home session I always ask one question: which room has the biggest window?

Window light

A large window facing north or away from the sun gives soft, even light, the kind that flatters everyone. Turn off the ceiling lights: mixed colours of light look muddy in photos.

Clear a corner

We don’t need a tidy house, just one calm corner near the window. Move a chair, open the curtains fully, and we’re ready.

Time of day

Mornings and late afternoons are softest. At midday, sheer curtains help.
